PSAT Prep
Want a head start on preparing for the PSAT?
PSAT is the one and only exam that allows the highest-achieving students in the nation to qualify as National Merit Semifinalists—an honor that can, for many students, garner a larger scholarship than any other exam. The PSAT is the sole factor for determining National Merit eligibility. While the junior year is the only year where the test qualifies students for National Merit, we recommend freshman and sophomores take the test for practice the one time a year it is offered (mid-October). We are offering a PSAT Crash Course June 13th & 14th to enable students to begin prepping for the test. The more time students have to practice and prepare for the PSAT the better.
Master the Test is hosting an informative meeting for parents to understand the PSAT and how to prepare their students for this test. Please join us on May 10th at 5:30-6:30 pm in the Edmond North Media Center.
Last year in our first year of PSAT test prep, we guided seven students to National Merit Semifinalist status. As a result, those students were eligible for a combined $840,000 in scholarships.
Check out www.masterthetest.net for more information on our crash courses.

Letter to Parents
Dear Parents,
Concerns have been growing in our community and school throughout this week regarding student conversations generated from the viewing of the Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why.”
The series follows the fictional story of a teenage girl who leaves behind 13 mysterious audio recordings on cassette tapes after killing herself. She addresses each recording to a person who she says played a role in her tragic decision to end her own life.
Several parents have called our offices this week to ask if we were seeing any signs of the program’s impact. To date, all we have noted is conversation.
Today, we decided it wise to simply alert all of our families of the popularity of the program so that parents might make informed decisions as to the appropriateness of the show for their own children, as well as options for parent-child co-viewing and post-viewing dialog.
For additional information on this topic, here are a few links you may find insightful.

If during conversations with your child, you find that he/she or another student needs assistance, do not hesitate to contact our counselors. At any time, if your student or another child needs help, here are some incredible resources:
Call SAM 1-855-225-2726;
Heartline (405) 848-2273;
Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1 800 273-TALK (8255)
As always, if there is anything we can do in partnership to serve you, your child, or your family, please give us a call.

Box Tops
Box Top Collections begin Tuesday, February 14 th and continue through Wednesday, February 22nd. Bring your Box Tops to your homeroom teacher—If your class collects the most Box Tops in your grade you will win a trip to Shimmers for a free small drink!!!
Late Bus Schedule
The late bus only runs on Tuesday and Thursday and is only for students assigned to study hall . Teachers can host students in their own study hall and sign them up for the bus. Students cannot ride the bus for any other reason other than they stayed for study hall. Activities and meetings require students to arrange their own transportation. Again, ONLY students assigned to study hall can ride the late bus.
Safety for Students
It is not permitted for students to arrive on school campus and then leave. For example, a bus that brings a student to Sequoyah, that student cannot then go to 7-Eleven or Braum’s. Students who leave campus after school cannot return to school unless they are returning for a scheduled event. Example, leaving campus to go to Shimmers, then returning to school to wait for a ride is not allowed. Once students leave, they need to be picked up from that location. Parents and the school need to know where students are expected to be for safety reasons.
Arrival Time
Please do not drop students off at school any earlier than 7:15. There is no supervision before this time.
Dismissal Time
The school day is over at 2:40. Students who ride in cars should be picked up no later than 3:00. If this is not possible, please have students catch their bus. Students are not supervised after 2:50. Unfortunately, we often see students waiting for rides at 4:00 or even 5:00 pm. This is not a safe plan.

There are many opportunities for after school activities and clubs at Sequoyah!

Message regarding intra-district transfers
Families are reminded that Edmond’s secondary schools do not accept intra-district transfers. In compliance with Edmond school board policy #4850, certain exceptions exist, including ROTC participants, employee children attending school in their parents’ vertical, and (through the 2018-19 school year) younger siblings of students who were redistricted, but chose to attend — and will still be attending — their original schools. Families seeking an exception in any of the listed cases may pursue further information at the district office (1001 W. Danforth) by calling Judy Thomas at 340-2823. Enrollment Exception Request forms are available from Mrs. Thomas; they must be completed and returned to her by March 3 at 3:00 pm.

Our emergency clothing drawers are empty!
We need new or gently used sweats and pants for students who spill or have a mending emergency (AKA clothing malfunction!) We don’t need a lot, but size child 12 to Men’s XL are welcome. Also if you run across flip flops for a great clearance price, we keep an inventory for broken shoes. You can drop these off in the office.
Spirit Wear
We have plenty of Sequoyah Socks (and more) on-hand.
They make great stocking stuffers!!
Orders placed by Dec 16th will be delivered to school by Dec 19th.
Head over to http://www.sequoyahspo.org and visit the store!
Drop Off and Pick UP
Just a friendly reminder . . . please park or pull to the side when waiting to pick up your student after school. The traffic needs to continue to flow, so the “lanes” need to be left open for cars to pull through once students are picked up. In the front of the building, both lanes need to be clear so that both cars and buses can continue to flow out of the parking lot as the light turns green. Thanks for your continued help with this!

Sequoyah Parents,
As we enter the season of giving thanks, the Sequoyah Parent Organization is extending an invitation to your family to consider giving back to your child’s school.
With budgets in Oklahoma public schools shrinking every year, schools are left to try to make up significant short falls to continue to offer the most up-to-date, quality education. That is no exception here at Sequoyah. Our children are very fortunate to receive one of the highest ranked middle school educations in the state. With many advances in technology and curriculum though, we too must find extra funds to ensure this superior education for years to come. Monies raised in this campaign will assist with adding many tools for advancement including new computers, computer carts and professional development training.
Along with school administrators, we have established fundraising goals for this school year and ask that you review them to determine the level of commitment that works for your family. Listed below, we have arranged numerous hassle-free options for you to send your donations. These donations are tax deductible and a letter can be provided at your request.
As an incentive, we have arranged for the grade with the greatest donation commitment to receive a “free seating” lunch day accompanied by music and treat!
Thank you very much for supporting your school and many blessings this holiday season. Sequoyah Parent Organization

Fundraising to Support Teacher Professional Development
With recent budget cuts, the money available to send teachers to training has significantly decreased. For each shirt purchased we will donate $9 to the Sequoyah Professional Development Fund. Our goal is to raise $1,600. To reach this goal we need to sell 180 TShirts! This will pay for 9 teachers to attend training. Allowing our teachers to attend training is essential in order to keep our teachers current and encourage continuous learning. Professional development allows our teachers to collaborate with other educators around the state and bring back practices and pedagogy that is relevant and meaningful to our students.

Color Run Rescheduled to Sept. 29
IMPORTANT : The date of the Edmond Dog Pack Color Run has been POSTPONED to next Thursday, September 29th at 6:00 PM . The reason for this is because there is a high chance for thunderstorms and severe weather on Saturday , and we do not want that to interfere with the race. We are sorry for an inconvenience, but we are expecting that next Thursday’s start time will work even better than the one that was initially planned for this Saturday .

CHECK WRITING CAMPAIGN
**Information is being sent home THIS WEEK! Please check backpacks for fliers & envelopes. Thank You for your support!
Sequoyah Families:
The SPO’s Annual Check Writing Campaign has begun and we need your help! If each person would give $10.00, we could raise the $10,000 we still need to complete our gym improvements and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) initiative!
So please dip into your fun fund and send $10.00 for each kiddo! This is as easy as giving up:
- Two Starbucks caramel macchiatos
- Two grilled chicken sandwiches from Chick-fil-a
- Two People magazines
- Five Large Sonic Drinks
- Two Madden Mobile downloads
- 8 iTunes songs
- 3 Fuzzy’s Tacos
As you can see, it will only take a small sacrifice to help us achieve our fundraising goals this year. Please take a moment and write a check to help us succeed! Not that we won’t take your check for more, but $10.00 per student is really all it takes.
It has been a very difficult year for Edmond Public Schools and with financial support from the state declining, we need all the help we can get to keep Sequoyah – your child’s school – going strong!
Donated prizes will be awarded daily to the classes from each grade level who have the highest participation rate. At the end of our 10 day check campaign, the winning class will receive a donated Shimmer’s party and that teacher will receive $50.00 towards classroom supplies! The last day of the campaign will culminate with a “bring a dollar” pajama day!
PLEASE GIVE AND HELP SEQUOYAH FINISH THEIR STEAM INITIATIVE AND MAKE IMPROVMENTS TO OUR GYM!
SO GIVE $10 FOR THE WIN!

Rotary International Youth Exchange
Rotary International
- is a worldwide organization with 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries
- consists of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders
- club members, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world
- has a motto of Service Above Self
- has a main objective of service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.
Rotary International Youth Exchange
- Program’s purpose is to build peace and world understanding one exchange at a time
- Exposure to different cultures is one of the most powerful ways to promote international understanding and peace.
- Program provides thousands of young students with the opportunity to meet people from other countries and to experience new cultures, planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding
- The program offers numerous benefits to its young participants and their Rotarian hosts and mentors, as well as to the community at large.
- Program began during the 1920s as an effort between a handful of clubs in Europe. Today, more than 8,000 Youth Exchange students travel abroad each year to live and study in about 80 countries.
Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program presents opportunities for high school students to advance their education, become a better person, and contribute to world understanding by allowing them to attend school in a different country. Students live with host families in their adopted land under the sponsorship and supervision of the local host Rotary Club. It is Rotary’s hope that these students will be able to see firsthand the problems and accomplishments of other people of different colors, creeds, and cultures. As their concept of the world expands, they mature and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. Through immersion in another country’s educational system their academic and personal growth is enhanced. Host clubs and families and the entire community are enriched by extended, friendly contact with someone from a different culture. Because of the lengthy history of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, their exchange program is the largest in the world. And because arrangements are made by local Rotarians, it is also one of the safest youth exchange programs in the world.
Hosting a Rotary International Exchange Student
Rotary Exchange students are generally hosted by two to four families during their stay, but always in the same school district. This allows for a broader understanding of the cultural and social/economic aspects of the region, while simultaneously allowing more families to participate in the program. This also encourages a variety of activities during the year.
The responsibilities of a host family are to accept the exchange student as a new member of your family. The student will be governed not only by the rules of the program but by the rules of your household. You are responsible for the safety of the exchange student the same as for your own children.
Rotary Clubs are always looking for potential host families. If you’d like to enrich your family’s experience by bringing in a Rotary exchange student, contact your high school counselor, local Rotary Club, or the District Youth Exchange Officer, Jerry Burger by email burgerjb8@aol.com or by phone (405) 850-4661. And thanks so much for your interest!
If you would like to speak with a family that has experienced sending their student to a foreign country as a foreign exchange ambassador and has also hosted foreign exchange students from around the world please contact Brandon or Lori Pagebrandon.page@edmondschools.net or lori.page@hcahealthcare.com

The class in each grade with the most Box Tops will win a Snow Cone party. Last year we raised almost $3,000. Let’s raise even more this year.
